About the Theatre

The Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre (NRT) is a fully equipped 318-seat Performance venue and is one of the few mid-size theatres in Vancouver suitable for professional presentations. The NRT is perfect for artists to "graduate" beyond the 150-200 seat venues that so many Lower Mainland artists perform in as it offers a production value superior to these venues and the opportunity to reach a financial break even point and the ability to increase box office revenue beyond this point. The NRT features a complete sound and lighting system (which was upgraded in 2005 and 2006 respectively), a full-size movie screen and commercial projector, dance floor and a grand piano and mid-stage traveler. Located in the heart of the beautiful Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, the facility is wheelchair accessible, air-conditioned and has onsite parking available.

NRT History

Norman Rothstein was born in 1918 into a pioneer family in the Vancouver Jewish community. Norman was a successful businessman and, with his wife and beloved life partner Annette, had a passion for Israel and the Cultural Arts. He held many positions in local Jewish and cultural arts organizations including Vice-President of the United Jewish Appeal and Board Member and strong supporter of the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre and the Vancouver Art Gallery. His leadership in both the Jewish and the cultural arts communities led to Annette Rothstein's endowment of the Norman Rothstein Theatre in the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver as a fitting way to honour his memory. During its early years, Annette Rothstein was the theatre's Honourary Patron. Upon her death, her name was added to the theatre to honour her dedicated support of this important community resource.

Artistic Programming

Chutzpah! The Lisa Nemetz Showcase of Jewish Performing Arts is a multi-disciplinary annual Performing Arts Festival, now in its 18th year, that celebrates the best of professional arts and culture, showcasing both emerging and established Jewish artists (in collaboration with non-Jewish artists). Chutzpah! features traditional as well as ground-breaking performances in dance, comedy, music and theatre. The Norman Rothstein Theatre and its Artistic Programming and Chutzpah! Festival gives Lower Mainland audiences work that:

The Chutzpah! Festival fosters artistic growth by crossing cultural and generational boundaries as well as artistic disciplines. Chutzpah! will continue in 2018, to provoke thought and discourse about meaningful issues as well as entertain audiences with great performances by local, national and international artists. Chutzpah! gives much needed exposure and support to emerging artists as well as bringing to the stage seasoned professionals for the sheer enjoyment of our community. It is a professionally programmed festival and it is done so with the idea that art in all its forms is meant to inspire, educate and entertain.
